August 8, 2023, marked our one-year, re-opening anniversary. Many things have happened, and much more is still to come.
Big Sandy senior center board and staff would like to thank all our community members who have donated money, time, groceries, and other supplies. We would also like to take this time to thank Rotary for our newly painted dining area along with the 3 community members who donated funds to help decorate.
Throughout the 22-23 year we have incorporated a few new things. On the 2nd Monday of each month, we will be celebrating birthdays along with holding a pie raffle, purchase a ticket for $1.00 to get in the raffle. On Thursday mornings we serve hot cinnamon or caramel rolls or maple bars with a cup of coffee for $3.00. Another thing we are doing is selling dinner rolls, for those special occasions. Just give us a call at 409-378-2405 a few weeks in advance and tell us how many you need. As many already know last month we prepared harvest meals so keep in mind if you don’t want to do the cooking give us a call and we will do the cooking for you. And remember the senior center is available to rent for your special occasions.
Activities were slow to come but we did have pinochle on Thursdays, and everybody seemed to enjoy playing and visiting. We will be starting back with activities in the later part of September. Our plan is to have pinochle 1 day per week, dinner and bingo one evening each month and a card making activity once the holidays are a little closer. Not forgetting the idea on the back burner chicken bingo. Please, if you have any other ideas for activities you would like to see offered and participate in at the senior center let us know. We are hoping to make the 23-24 year an enjoyable year for the whole community.
As the colder months draw near, please take the time to check in with your elder neighbors to make sure they are doing ok. If you find they need assistance have them reach out to the center and we will do our best to assist them in any way, we can.
Once again, we would like to applaud those who have volunteered. At the same time, we are reaching out to the community asking that if you have an extra hour or two a week, please consider volunteering at the senior center. We would be elated to have you as a part of our team. We need volunteers to assist in the following areas: delivering meals, kitchen assistance, help with deep cleaning the center once a week. And when the winter hits and it starts to turn white the elders in our community would appreciate more than anything having their driveways and sidewalks shoveled (please help keep them safe from falls). If you are unable to donate your time but have other methods of donating in mind let us know as any type of donation big or small will better assist the community senior center. Our goal here at Big Sandy senior center is to keep our community a family friendly place where everyone is welcome. Please contact Robin or Brenda at the senior center 406-378-2405 and let us know how you can help.
