Big Sandy High School shop class has been busy preparing for a subterranean geothermal greenhouse, given to Big Sandy by a grant from Northwest Farm Credit Services. Helping to get the site, which is by the football field, ready were Jay Worral, and Blaine Ophus who both came over and helped dig dirt. Layne Taylor said, "They brought over their equipment and donated their time to help me dig it out. So, they actually did most of the digging. We have just been building. I also had Jesse Hartley, bring a skid skier down and let us borrow it to drill some holes. I had my tractor down there drilling some holes until my three-point hitch broke and then he came in and with his good steer loader and drilled some holes. He's bringing it out again Monday so we can drill some more."
Layne and Wendy drove to Alliance, Nebraska to pick up the Greenhouse to bring it to Big Sandy.
They got back Sunday night. I asked when the Greenhouse would be done and he said, "That's a million-dollar question. We are going to push hard to get it in before the snow flies too hard, but that's not going to happen because it's supposed to snow on Tuesday or Wednesday."
He needs volunteers to help him. "We could definitely use some help when it comes time to pour for the sidewalks. The next step is Shane Silvan putting in the water line, for the water to be installed, and then we can start forming the sidewalks. All right, we will have to go out to pour the sidewalks then, before we can start framing and putting together the greenhouse structure together.
It's very exciting this new project for the school. "It's really good. A lot of the community excitement about it as well."
"We'll need to pour the two baseball pads for the dugouts. At the baseball field. We were trying to do both those pours also. So there'll be three different slabs over there. And then the greenhouse slab is what we're trying to try to accomplish. So yeah, some help for that would be great.
Skeet shooting this year was great fun for the FFA members. Steve Stiles and Brad Moore had the FFA skeet shooting. "Oh, we had a better even bigger turnout than we did last year. We had a great time. Last year was the first time we did that in Big Sandy and we had a pretty good group of boys that showed up and some girls shot and enjoyed it,"
Big Sandy FFA did well at both the District FFA contest in Lewistown and in Ruby Valley down near Sheridan Montana. At Ruby Valley. They placed 6th in Livestock and 8th in horse. Both teams should be able to advance to state. It was mostly the younger group made up of junior high kids in Ruby Valley. We camped out at Mill Creek Campground and then competed in livestock judging before coming home. That's fun.
