The Lady Longhorns and the Lady Pioneers braved the harsh weather and decided to play their game this past weekend. The game was filled with several fouls from the get-go, and both teams struggled to get into a flow of any sort. But that didn’t stop the Lady Pioneers from coming out on top with a final score of 49-36.
In the 8-minute quarter, there were a combined 8 fouls, and there were also a combined 11 turnovers in the first quarter, which caused both teams to struggle with trying to do anything with the basketball. The score at the end of the 1st quarter was only 9-5. The Lady Pioneers did have a nice inside-out play from Keria Galbavy to Jai Baumann for a 3-pointer and a nice rebound from Jenny Sant to Eva Yeadon for a great take to the basket. Jai had another 3-pointer to finish the quarter off for the Lady Pioneers.
Unfortunately, the second quarter started just like the first quarter, with another 3 fouls called in the first 2 minutes and another combined 11 turnovers in the second quarter. After the first two minutes of the quarter, no more fouls were called, and both teams could start setting up plays and pushing the ball up the floor. Lainey Terry had a big 3-pointer, and Eva had a big quarter, scoring 12 points off of a 3-pointer, a turnaround jumper, and two hard takes to the basket to get to the free-throw line. Jai contributed with some big steals to help catapult the Lady Pioneers past the Lady Longhorns, but the Lady Longhorns also had success shooting and attacking the basket. The Lady Pioneers were up 4 points going into halftime with a score of 24-20.
The second half started with a nice give-and-go from Eva to Jai, followed by another bucket from Eva. Jai had a nice steal and fast-break layup, putting the Pioneers up 30-22. Keira had a great defensive quarter with back-to-back steals and a block down low. Eva scored on a rebound and putback, and Jenny Sant also had a putback to put the Lady Pioneers up 12 with a score of 34-22 going into the last stanza.
The Lady Longhorns outscored the Lady Pioneers in the last quarter by 1, but unfortunately for them, they couldn’t stop the Lady Pioneers. The Lady Pioneers finished the game-winning, with
We struggled a bit on offense but our defense was able to hold the #3 team in the conference to 36 points, with a 5 point quarter in the first and a 2 point quarter in the third.
Eva Yeadon had a double-double in points and rebounds (24-15), while Jenny Sant continues her great play with 7 points, 9 rebounds and 5 steals. Jai Baumann ended the night with 11 points 5 assists and 6 steals. It was a great defensive team win.
