Top Yielding Spring Wheat Varieties for Chouteau County

MSU Agricultural Research Centers have one test plot for spring wheat in Chouteau county which is managed by MSU Northern Agricultural Research Center (NARC) north of Loma. A special thanks to Peggy Lamb (NARC agronomist) for establishing and maintaining the Chouteau county test plot. The Extension office would also like to thank the McKeever family for donating the use of their land for MSU research.

The NARC (Loma area) top three yielding spring wheat varieties (10-year average yield) from 2014-2023 were MT Carlson, MT Dutton and Dagmar. MT Carlson averaged 40.7 bushels per acre, MT Dutton averaged 39 bushels per acre and Dagmar averaged 38.9 bushels per acre. The top yielding solid stem sawfly-tolerant variety were WB Gunnison at 34.9 followed by Duclair at 34.8 and Choteau at 31.7 bushels per acre. NARC 2023 winter wheat, spring wheat and durum variety testing reports are available at the Chouteau County Extension office.

Nutrien Ag Solutions has a plot near Carter, Montana. The top three yielding spring wheat varieties for multiple years (three-year average for dryland plots near Carter) were Rocker at 50.0 bushels per acre, Vida at 49.8 bushels per acre and WB 9719 at 45.4 bushels per acre.
