Summer Food Service Program

Hello Big Sandy Community! With school nearly out for summer, I wanted to bring attention to a FREE food program that is new to our area. It is called the Summer Food Service Program, or SFSP for short. Not to be confused with the Summer EBT (which does require paperwork) that is also being promoted right now. Superintendent Schrock, District Business Manager, Mary Merrill, and the Big Sandy School Board of Trustees all got the wheels of this train rolling which I’m sure was no easy feat, so if you see any of them be sure to thank them for all of their efforts. The SFSP wants to help us feed our children nutritious foods that don’t require a lot of prep and are easy to consume. EVERY CHILD in this district has been “prequalified” to receive a weekly box filled with various food items. These items will meet or exceed OPI’s minimum guidelines for milk, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and meat or meat alternatives. Our SFPS site (the grade school) is non-congregate, meaning that these boxes of food will contain a week’s worth of items and WILL NOT be consumed on site. There is NO PAPERWORK to fill out or proof of income required to qualify for this program. To receive a box, contact Mary Merrill with the school district business office or myself, Jessica Butler, in any form of communication and tell us how many children will participate. EVEN IF YOU ARE A GRANDPARENT WITH OUT-OF-TOWN GRANDCHILDREN VISITING, they are eligible to receive a box. The details are as follows: What? A box filled with FREE food. The items will cover breakfast and lunches for 7 days a week and the meal items will vary from week to week. Who? All children 1-18 years old in our district. Cost? Free. Zero. Zilch. Nada. $0. Plus, no paperwork. Where? F.E. MILEY ELEMENTARY 342 Vernon Ave, Big Sandy When? EVERY TUESDAY STARTING JUNE 4th Time? BOX PICK UP will be between 10am-12noon If you have any questions or would like to enroll your child(ren) you can email Mary at business@bigsandy.k12.mt.us or myself (Jessica Butler) at jbutler@bigsandy.k12.mt.us This is a great opportunity for all children/families! Follow the Big Sandy Schools Facebook page and participate in any surveys regarding SFSP and get your child enrolled ASAP so we can ensure that everyone that wants to can receive a box.
