Pioneer football win big over Kinights 74-50

The Pioneer football team put on a show offensively this past weekend. Karter Jurenka scored seven touchdowns in a big win against North Star. The final score was similar to a basketball game: 74-50.

Coach Taylor said, “The offense played pretty darn well. Our special teams at times were a weapon and at times let us down. We’ve got to get better in that department. The boys played good defense at times but our tackling needs to improve. Karter Jurneka had a good game. He had seven touchdowns and an interception. Dolan Sunchild had a nice goal line touchdown.”

The first play of the game that started the pace for the Pioneers was a kickoff return from Karter Jurneka for a touchdown. But in the following kickoff back to North Star, they also returned it for a touchdown. In fact, that happened a couple more times throughout the game. Wes Cox had an excellent 65-yard return for a touchdown after the North Star kickoff. The Pioneers led 12-6 early. Karter Jurenka, Aidan Morsette, and Braxton Hajenga all had great tackles on defense, but the Knights of North Star still scored on another run and made their kick to put the Pioneers down 12-14. Wes and Karter had great runs and tackles, including a touchdown-saving tackle. Aidan also had a nice run, but North Star scored on another run, and the Pioneers found themselves down 12-22 at the end of the 1st quarter.

Dolan Sunchild got a first down for the Pioneers and then also scored a touchdown on the next play, putting the Pioneers down only one score 18-22. The Pioneers were masters of the onside kick and had some amazing plays, runs, and first downs, which led to more touchdowns. Aidan had a great fumble recovery, and Quinn had a nice 25-yard run. At the end of the quarter, North Star was called for a horse collar at the buzzer, and the Pioneers got another touchdown from Karter, putting the Pioneers up going into halftime 37-28.

The Pioneers did another onside kick to start the second half and recovered that one, which resulted in the recovery of a busted play, and Wes scored a touchdown on a 35-yard run. But North Star turned around and scored on the kickoff return again, making the score 43-36. When North Star kicked off, Wes ran for another 50 yards, Doaln ran for 8 yards, and Karter scored on a short run into the end zone. On defense, Karter then got an interception. Karter threw a great pass to Eyon Sherburn for a 1st down, and Wes followed with another 25-yard gain. Karter scored another touchdown on a sweep, putting the Pioneers up 56-36.

Karter scored two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, and Wes had some great tackles and first-down runs. The Pioneers just couldn’t be stop
