MSU Ag Expo, sponsored by John Deere

The Big Sandy FFA chapter recently traveled to Boseman for the MSU Ag Expo. competitions sponsored by John Deere. A total of 17 students, along with our dedicated advisor Layne Taylor and assistant Traci Rodewald, made the trip. Our members participated in 12 different events. We departed on Wednesday, November 13th, and spent the next three action-packed days there, returning on Saturday, November 16th. Every day was filled with intense competitions, where we pushed ourselves to give our best performance. Our students developed and demonstrated their skills in the animal sciences by competing in veterinary science, livestock, horse and meat evaluation contests. Students tested their knowledge and skills in the plant sciences by competing in contests in agronomy, range and soils. We even had some students branch out into new territory for us and tried their hand at the Food Science contest. Students participated in Ag sales where they were marketing skid steer loaders and attachments. Students demonstrated their skills in the equipment operations contest where they demonstrated how to safely operate skid steer loaders, tractors, trailers and track hoes. Perhaps our most beloved event with the majority of our students participating is the Agriculture mechanical and technical systems competition.

Our members individually placed very well. A few of the highlights include senior Severin Heimbigner’s 1st place finish in Mechanics out of 339 participants is a huge accomplishment. Senior Alex Worral’s 10th place finish in livestock out of 296 competitors was also evidence of years of practice and skill development. Colter Han placed 10th in jr mechanics and Tommy Sant placed 9th in soils. Which further highlights the talent and hard work of our members.

Our teams had an excellent showing demonstrating strong skills and teamwork. Highlights include our Jr mechanics team placed 10th/ 72 teams, and our Jr. livestock team placed 11th / 63 teams. We placed 8th in range and 6th in soils. We look forward to seeing the success of these young members as they continue to train for future events.

This success is a testament to the dedication and teamwork of Big Sandy FFA, and we look forward to even more achievements as the year progresses!
