The year 2024 has been positive for the senior center, although it has also brought some sadness. We have been able to offer a wider variety of dishes on our menu, along with homemade baked goods, and engaging activities such as bingo nights and pinochle. We've made new friends and mourned the loss of a few; may they rest in peace.
We set a goal to acquire a generator for the facility, similar to the one at the hospital, and we are very close to reaching this goal. We hope to raise the remaining $2,200 before next fall so that it can be operational by winter. We have raised funds through caramel roll Tuesdays, bingo, pinochle, the 2024 Christmas stroll and raffle, and the generosity of our donors. We will continue caramel roll Tuesdays, pinochle, and monthly bingo until the funds are raised.
Once the generator is installed, we will be able to continue cooking and providing food to the community during power outages. We also plan to use the building as a safe place where people can retreat to stay warm or cool in the summer. This will allow us to ensure that oxygen tanks remain operational and provide a safe-haven from the elements during power outages.
The 2024 Christmas stroll was a success. We are grateful to the family who donated breakfast for all the children. It wouldn't have been much of a Christmas celebration without Santa and his elves, who helped out in so many ways. French toast seemed to be the perfect choice, along with family fun bingo in the afternoon. It took many hours of preparation to organize everything and prepare all the goodies for the day, but the senior center staff persevered, as our efforts were not about us; it was about the community.
May peace be with you, and may prosperity be near. May your family gather without heartache or tears. Look to the star above and wish for worries to cease. May all you need be yours as you close your eyes in peace.
Big Sandy Senior Center would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe New Year.
