Lady Pioneers fall to Hays/Lodgepole and stomp the Kinights

The Lady Pioneers played Hays and North Star this past weekend. The girls lost against Hays but returned and beat North Star the next night. Hays shot great against the Lady Pioneers, and the Lady Pioneers struggled a bit with turnovers, but they were missing key player Junior Keira Galbavy from a broken foot. They lost with a final score of 37-45. Against North Star, the Lady Pioneers' defense was aggressive, and North Star struggled to take care of the ball. The Lady Pioneers also held them to just 3 points in the first quarter. The Lady Pioneers beat them with a final score of 71-38.

Against Hays, the Lady Pioneers started out with some steals and great takes to the basket, but Hays went on a 12-0 run to go up by 9 points at the end of the 1st quarter. In the second quarter, the Lady Pioneers outscored Hays 13-8 and went into halftime only down 2 points. The Lady Pioneers got some great steals from Eva Yeadon, Jai Baumann, Jenny Sant, and Kenzie Kallenberger. The Lady Pioneers also had great passes from Eva, Kenzie, Alex Worrall, and Brianna Terry. The Lady Pioneers work so well as a team that when talking about great plays/defense/passes, it goes across the board of that team and who's on the court at that time. Korbyn Jurenka also had some huge, crucial rebounds that helped the Lady Pioneers get back into the game.

Hays' hot shooting continued through the second half as well. The third quarter was a very slow quarter for both teams, with Big Sandy only scoring 3 points and Hays scoring 6 points. In the fourth quarter, the Pioneers started fouling, and Hays was getting to the free-throw line. Korbyn hit a big three-pointer near the end of the game, but it wasn't enough to bring the Lady Pioneers back. The Lady Pioneers ended up losing by 8 points.

Coach Travis had this to say:

After losing Galbavy to a broken foot on Wednesday, we traveled to Hays on Friday for a game. While we did not play a great game, it was a good learning experience for us to play without a key player. We were led by Yeadon in scoring with 15, followed by Baumann with 7, and Kallenberger with 6. We lost the game by 8. Saturday afternoon, we played North Star. Our offense and defense had a great showing. We put up 71 points and held North Star to 38. We were led in scoring by Kallenberger with 24; she knocked down six 3's. Yeadon followed us with 20 and Baumann with 11. We play DGS on Tuesday at home, then on Friday, we play in Fort Benton, and on Saturday at home against Box Elder.
