The Lady Pioneers went 2-0 this past weekend, playing against Cascade and Turner. With less than a month to go before Districts, the girls are cruising right along. They beat Cascade by 29 points on Friday, with a final score of 76-47. Then, they turned around and played a tough Turner team on Saturday, but still won by 3 points, with a final score of 41-38.
The Lady Pioneers started strong right from the get-go with Cascade and put a nice run on them, going up 13-2; Cascade got a few good plays in but had already dug themselves in a hole and had a hard time stopping the tenacity of the Lady Pioneers. Kenzie Kallenberger had a lovely jumper to start the game and then a great pass to Eva Yeadon for a 3-pointer. Jenny Sant and Alex Worrall had some big rebounds. Eva and Kenzie both had some great steals, and Kenzie had more big buckets with a drive to the middle and a 3-pointer as well. Jai Baumann contributed with some amazing passes for some great fast break layups. The Lady Pioneers went into the 2nd quarter up 16 points with a score of 26-10.
The other quarters were fun to watch as the lady pioneers work hard both offensively and defensively. Head Coach Travis Baumann wrote, “Friday night, we played the #1 team out of the 10C, the Cascade Lady Badgers. We came out on top 76-47! We had 24 assists on 29 made shots for an 83% assist rate! Yeadon scored 26, while Kallenberger put 17, followed by Jurenka and Baumann with 8 each. Yeadon grabbed 14 boards, followed by Baumann with 7 and Kallenberger with 5. Baumann led the team with 10 assists, followed by Yeadon with 7 and Kallenberger with 4. Yeadon led the team with 5 steals, while Sant and Kallenberger had 3. Yeadon led the team with 3 blocks. Every player got into the game. This was the highest point output of the season for the Lady Pioneers.”

The Lady Pioneers then turned around and played a tough Turner team and found themselves down 0-5 in the first couple minutes of the game, but with their aggressive pressure on defense and press, they were able to come back and even pull ahead after the first quarter, outscoring them 10-5 at the end of the first. Turner had a tough post player that dominated the rebounds, but the Lady Pioneers had some great plays from Eva with a board and bucket, Jai getting a steal and followed with a fast break layup, and Elaina with a board and bucket as well.
The second quarter was Turner’s chance to go on a 10-0 run, holding the Lady Pioneers to 6 points. It was a fight to the finish!
Team Stats vs. Turner: Rebounds: 30 with Eva having 8, Free throws: 7/15, Steals: 16 with Kenzie and Jenny having 5, Assists: 7 with Kenzie and Jai having 2 and Turnovers: 17.
Travis continued, “We played the very scrappy Lady Tornadoes of Turner on Saturday. With the offense struggling to put the ball in the basket, we doubled down with our defense, holding Turner to 38 points. Baumann led the team with 13 points, Worrall with 10, and Yeadon with 9.”
Next week, we are on the road against the #2 team in the 9C CJI on Friday and in Denton against the #1 team in the 8C DGSG.”
